Not since the Tenterfield Tigers convincingly beat the Stanthorpe Gremlins to claim the prestigious Caldwell Cup has there been a prouder day in that beautiful northern NSW country town than when locals woke up last Wednesday to find their answers, letters and prayers had been answered and Anthony Petrie is now a columnist for the NBL website. Although Tenterfield won that game 52-10, their Rugby League Club president, Damian Petrie (yes, Anthony’s brother) said their team was “undisciplined and threw too many unnecessary passes and didn’t stick to their structures”. This cannot be said for the 36ers over the weekend, who put in another great performance to fend off a hard fighting Wollongong Hawks.
Anthony’s team is on a roll at the moment. I’ve been fortunate enough to have known Peach since I was a junior and I’ve always enjoyed watching his dunks and hair receding on the court. Now I will also look forward to his skills off the court with his weekly columns. Welcome to the team Peach.
As for the Wildcats over the weekend we managed to escape Cairns with a win. Cairns got off to a great start and it felt like whenever Alex Loughton or Cam Tragardh shot the ball we were taking it out of the net. We managed to get back in the game and take a two-point lead with the game almost over but a great crossover in to a lay-up with only seconds remaining by Demetri McCamey put the game in to over-time.
This was our first test all season to see how we would handle an over-time game and I thought the guys handled it really well. Beal and Ennis in particular hit some big shots with a hand in their face and helped seal the game. Shawn Redhage was great for us again and like he has done all season he continues to hit big shots at important times of the game.
We got off to a terrible start, out-played by Cairns at both ends of the court and it wasn’t until we got a lift in energy from Wagstaff and Hire that we started to close the margin.
This week we play New Zealand in the first of back-to-back games versus the reigning champs. They’re playing good basketball at the moment and Vukona was incredible to watch last round so our bigs are in for a tough match-up against him on Friday night.
Finally, it is a great day for one Wildcats player in particular. Matty Knight became a father earlier today as he helped introduce Mia Rose Knight in to the world. Rumour has it Mia has already started working on her baby hook shoot. Congratulations to he and fiancé Sherelle.
Until next week,
