Perth Wildcats co-captain Damian Martin has suffered a partial tear of his Achilles tendon and will be sidelined for the rest of the season, ruling him out of the 2013 iiNet NBL Grand Final Series.
The injury occurred during the ‘Cats semi-final win over Wollongong on Sunday and he immediately motioned to the bench before being helped from the court. He took no further part in that game.
Head coach Rob Beveridge said it is a devastating blow for Martin and the team.
“We are absolutely devastated for Damo,” he said.
“This is a huge setback, but we are a very tightknit group and we will rally around him and provide him with everything he needs to help him during his recovery, so we can see him back on the court as soon as possible.”
Team physiotherapist Dave Philpot said the injury will keep him sidelined for up to 12 weeks.
“Damian won’t require surgery but will be in a (moon) boot for about eight weeks and then will need another four weeks of recovery leading into the pre-season,” said Philpot.
The Grand Final Series begins on Sunday 7 April in New Zealand.
