Damian Martin has made history by being named the NBL’s Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight season at a gala event in Melbourne.
Martin says it’s an honour to be recognised in a league with so many top class point-guards.
“Every week you usually have an import point-guard, and usually a high calibre point-guard, so there’s no easy weekends when you play against the guards in this league, so to win an award that says you’ve done a decent job on defence means a lot,” he said.
“I think I’m one of the few players who enjoys playing defence, and I hate going home after a game knowing my opponent has scored on me, so I think that’s what drives me.”
Damian Martin becomes just the third player in NBL history to win the award in three consecutive seasons, and the first since 2001.
Also receiving major honours were Wildcats stars Kevin Lisch and Matt Knight, who were both named in the All-NBL first team for season 2012/13.
Lisch was pleased to back up his MVP award-winning year with another impressive season at the Perth Wildcats.
“It really is a great honour, to be chosen as one of five guys in the whole league is an accomplishment I’m proud of,” he said.
Big man Matt Knight was also thrilled with the honour.
“I’ve worked hard to be the best big in the league and to be rewarded is quite humbling and I’m really happy,” said Knight.
The team will now regroup in Perth as they prepare for game one of their semi-final series on Thursday night.
