Perth Wildcats assistant coach Andy Stewart has ended his tenure as the long-time head coach at Lakeside Lightning in style by winning the 2013 SBL Championship.
The Lightning were the best team all season but in the final game of the year they were pushed to the final buzzer by their underdog opponents the Wanneroo Wolves.
Stewart’s men held their nerve in the tense final moments of the game, hitting clutch free-throws while Wanneroo struggled to make a basket, resulting in a thrilling 77-74 championship victory.
Lakeside’s Justin Cecil was named the game’s MVP for his 25 points and seven rebounds.
The Lightning’s victorious captain, Jarrad Prue pulled down an amazing 21 boards for the game and in doing so became the leading rebounder in SBL history. Benjamin Beran was also important with 16 points and eight rebounds.
In his final SBL game, Wanneroo’s Damian Matacz top scored for the Wolves with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Sebastian Salinas put up 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
2012/13 Wildcats development player Trian Iliadis finished off a strong season with a double-double, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Championship winning coach Andy Stewart will now solely focus on the Perth Wildcats with their season tipping off at Perth Arena on Friday 11 October.
