Wednesday, May 14, 2014, 10:38:44 AM

Perth Wildcats Championship captain Damian Martin has agreed to a new deal, which will see him remain at the club until at least 2016.

Martin signed a two-year contract with a third year player option, which if chosen will see him representing Perth through to the 2016/17 NBL season.

The 29-year-old arrived at the Wildcats in 2009 and joins Jesse Wagstaff as re-signed Championship players ahead of the club’s title defence in 2014/15.

“I’m very excited and looking forward to the next few years. Winning a Championship with the club this year and winning one in 2010 have been my two biggest highlights in the NBL, and I’m hoping to add a few more Championships in the next three years, but it’s a privilege to be part of this club,” said Martin.

“The players and coaches we work with have become my best friends and life-long friends, playing in front of eleven thousand fans each week is a dream come true, and the professionalism of the organistion as a whole are all reasons I’ve chosen to continue my career here in Perth. It’s a pleasure to be a part of”

Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson described Damian Martin as the engine room that powers his team.

“It’s fantastic to have the captain back, he had an outstanding season in 2013/14 and I think he’s just hitting the peak of his career, and I’m ecstatic that we’re starting see the core group coming back.”

“He’s the barometer to how we’re playing on the court, I think his leadership grew as the year went on and I’m looking for him to grow that over the next couple of years.”

Martin’s five years at the Wildcats have been highly decorated, winning two NBL Championships (2010 and 2014) and becoming the first player in League history to be awarded Best Defensive Player in four consecutive seasons (2011 – 2014).

The point guard was also named in the All-NBL First Team in 2011 and the All-NBL Second Team in 2013 and 2014.

On top of his continued outstanding efforts on the defensive end of the court, Martin’s offensive game became a real threat to opponents in the 2013/14 NBL season – particularly from the three-point line where he made 42.1 per cent of his attempts (fourth in NBL).

He averaged 7.6 points per game at 44.4 per cent plus 3.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds while terrorising the opposition with an incredible 74 steals (first in NBL).

Wildcats managing director Nick Marvin said Martin’s contribution to the club has been phenomenal, on and off the court.

“I am very pleased to have our two time Championship player and captain commit to the Perth Wildcats at least for another two seasons,” said Marvin.

“It will be Damian’s sixth season with the Wildcats and we are rewarded for his loyalty – as it sees his NBL player points ranking drop from a 10 to an eight under the League’s new loyalty discount policy allowing us to keep the core group and build towards continued success on the court and in the community.”

Each team is allowed a maximum total of 70 player points.

Damian Martin becomes the sixth Wildcat to sign ahead of the 2014/15 season.
