In 2012/13, Damian Martin once again terrorised opposition guards with his outstanding relentless defensive pressure and was named the league’s Best Defensive Player for the third consecutive season. In January 2013 he was made a co-captain of the Perth Wildcats alongside Shawn Redhage and averaged 6.2 points per game, 2.0 steals and grabbed 5.5 rebounds before being struck by injury. He tragically missed his side’s grand final series after suffering a partial tear of his Achilles tendon.
Damian Martin captained Australia’s under-20 team to a world championship in 2003, defeating the USA in the gold medal game. He then attended Loyola Marymount University before making his NBL debut for the Sydney Spirit in the 2008/09 season. The Perth Wildcats recruited Martin in 2009 and became a championship player with the club in his first season. Throughout his career, he has averaged 7.3 points per game, 5.3 rebound, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals.
