Hard Work Pays Off: Peterson Elevated to Assistant Coach

At just 24 years old, Peterson has quickly built a reputation as one of the game’s emerging coaching talents. After graduating from the University of Redlands in 2023, the Los Angeles native wasted no time in pursuing his coaching career. 

Peterson first joined the Wildcats in 2023 as a Video Coordinator and Player Development Assistant, where his attention to detail, tireless work ethic and ability to connect with players and staff stood out.

His experience also includes a stint with the Philadelphia 76ers as a Player Development Intern during NBA Summer League, an Assistant Coach role with the Otago Nuggets in New Zealand, and time with Basketball Australia at the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup.

Peterson said he is excited to continue his journey with the Wildcats.

“I’m thrilled to step into this elevated role, where I’ll have the opportunity to speak directly with JR and work eye-to-eye with him and the coaching staff.

It’s an incredible honour to be part of the push to bring another championship back to Perth.”

 The promotion comes as Gerard Martin departs after two seasons with the Wildcats to join the Valley Suns, the G League affiliate of the Phoenix Suns, as an Assistant Coach.

Head Coach John Rillie praised both Gerard and Ben for their contributions to the Wildcats program.

“I would like to thank Gerard for his time and dedication to the Perth Wildcats in his time here.  I’m excited for both him and his wife (Ashlyn) as they step into their next chapter in life. Gerard is certainly just scratching the surface of where his career is heading. 

“Ben is a great example of what our program is about. Developing and giving the opportunity to grow in your role. Over his two seasons with the Wildcats, Ben has shown he has the ability to connect and help develop players,” said Rillie. 

Perth Wildcats General Manager of Basketball Operations Danny Mills thanked Martin for his contribution and welcomed Peterson into his new role.

“Gerard has been an outstanding contributor to our program over the past two seasons. His professionalism, work ethic and positive energy will be missed, and we wish him every success as he takes the next step in his career,” Mills said.

“At the same time, Ben has earned this opportunity through his tireless commitment and the strong relationships he has built across the organisation. He is a talented young coach with a bright future, and we’re excited to see the impact he will make in this role.”
