Rillie Makes Boomers Head Coach Debut, Pepper Set to Strike
Perth Wildcats Head Coach John Rillie will take charge of the Australian Boomers for the first time today as Australia continues its FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers campaign.
Window Two sees the Boomers embark on a crucial two-game stretch, opening against Guam men's national basketball team at the University of Guam Field House before travelling to Manila to face the Philippines men's national basketball team on Sunday March 1st.
Rillie’s appointment marks another significant milestone in his coaching career, with the Wildcats mentor guiding an Australian squad that remains undefeated through the opening phase of qualifiers. Australia currently sits equal first in Group A alongside the Philippines, with both matchups set to play a key role in shaping the standings.
The Boomers opened their qualifying campaign with a pair of hard-fought victories over New Zealand during Window One last November. An 84–79 win in Hobart set the tone before a dramatic two-point result in Wellington secured a perfect start to the road to Qatar.
The World Cup qualifying structure features 16 nations split across four groups, with teams required to finish inside the top three of their group to progress to Phase Two. From there, Group A qualifiers will combine with teams emerging from Group C, which includes Jordan, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
Following Phase Two, the top-performing nations will advance, with Qatar already qualified as tournament hosts.
Wildcats sharpshooter Elijah Pepper will line up for the Boomers today, adding perimeter firepower to the Australian squad. David Okwera was named in the Boomers squad but did not travel as he continues preparations for the Wildcats’ Finals campaign.
