Rillie’s High Praise for Duke Jr.

Perth Wildcats head coach John Rillie has praised the progress and professionalism of David Duke Jr., with the explosive guard continuing to build toward a return from his elbow injury.

Rillie said the guard’s approach throughout the rehabilitation process has been particularly impressive.

“He’s been involved in all practices this week from start to finish, so that’s pleasing. But there’s a part of making sure he gets through this and feels comfortable,” Rillie said.

Duke Jr.’s ability to attack the paint and absorb contact during scrimmages has been particularly encouraging, with Rillie noting the confidence the import has steadily built.

“That’s where his continued growth has been,” he said.

“You get through one practice, then now we’re probably two or three practices into that. From a confidence standpoint, it’s been a really progressive week.”

Despite the positive signs, Rillie made clear the club’s priority remains Duke Jr.’s readiness rather than setting a rigid timeline.

“It’ll really depend on how he pulls up, how he goes once he plays,” Rillie said.

“So no direct plan, but we want him to be really comfortable when he hits the ground running.”

Importantly, Rillie said Duke Jr.’s feel for the game has remained sharp.

“As you saw today, he had some great feel in moments. He doesn’t look rusty with the ball in hand,” he said.

“What’s been impressive is the way he’s handled and conducted himself through this. That’s what people don’t see, the work he’s been doing to get to this point.”

With the Wildcats entering a crucial stage of the season and having won eight of their last nine games, Rillie also reinforced the team’s broader mindset.

“We can’t rely on form and relax thinking that showing up is going to be enough,” he said.

“The way we approach practice sets you up for success. Hopefully we live in those moments and when Friday comes around, we’re ready to go.”

The Wildcats host the Brisbane Bullets on Friday night at RAC Arena.
