Rnd13 DrinkWise Game Preview: Wildcats vs Phoenix NBL26

The Perth Wildcats return to RAC Arena on Thursday night for a significant home outing, one that carries weight both immediately and in the context of the weeks ahead.
Facing a South East Melbourne Phoenix side sitting inside the NBL’s top four, the Wildcats will be eager to deliver a complete performance on their home floor before embarking on an extended run of five games on the road away from Perth.
Through the 12 rounds played in the Hungry Jack's NBL 26 season, the Wildcats currently sit fifth on the ladder at 10–8, just one win outside the top four, while SEM Phoenix arrive to Perth in third at 11–6.
With the middle of the ladder tightly packed, the game shapes as a significant opportunity for the Wildcats to close the gap on a direct rival and reinforce their position as finals contention intensifies.
Head Coach John Rillie has been clear about the approach required. His message is centred on performance, consistency and execution rather than chasing outcomes.
Rillie has stressed that if the Wildcats play to the level they expect of themselves and sustain it across four quarters, the result will take care of itself. He has also acknowledged the need to improve consistency at home, noting that strong, repeatable play is what allows the Red Army to fully engage and become the sixth man the group feeds off.
“We’ve got to produce the moments,” Rillie said during the week. “If we play the right way consistently, everything else will follow.”
South East Melbourne Phoenix are a team who apply pressure for 40 minutes, disrupt rhythm and thrive on creating extra possessions. When the teams last met in Round 7, it was a tightly contested affair decided by the possession battle, with South East Phoenix escaping with a narrow win.
The key for the Wildcats will be to stay connected defensively against a Phoenix side led by the offensive influence of Nathan Sobey. Sobey’s ability to score, draw fouls and command attention remains a major focal point, while South East Melbourne’s physicality demands discipline at both ends of the floor.
The Wildcats have shown an ability to defend at a high level and share the scoring load, which they displayed in their recent win over the Bullets in Brisbane as cohesion continues to grow within the group.
Thursday night also carries individual significance, with Jo Lual-Acuil Jr set to play his 150th NBL game. While the milestone reflects longevity and resilience, the Wildcats centre remains focused on the challenge ahead, with Perth again set to lean on his presence in his milestone game.
With finals positioning beginning to sharpen, Thursday night shapes as a pivotal moment. A win would not only close the gap on the top four, but also provide momentum and confidence heading into a demanding road stretch. For the Wildcats, it is an opportunity to honour a milestone, reward the Red Army and reinforce the identity they are continuing to build.
