Perth Wildcats v Cairns Taipans

The Wildcats have opened NBL26 with back-to-back gritty wins, lead by dominant performances from Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and the depth across the roster. Through the opening three rounds Lual-Acuil has delivered consistent two-way performances, averaging 19.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks.
His matchup against Cairns big man Marcus Lee, who impressed with 18 points against Adelaide last week, will be key.
Head Coach John Rillie said the team’s early success comes from a balance of chemistry and accountability, with every player understanding their role and buying into the defensive mindset that has anchored the first fortnight of the season.
“We’ve had a lot of concentration on the defensive areas as far as practice time that’s been dedicated to it,” Rillie said. “Jo’s been a big piece of that, Dylan and Doolittle are very instrumental, and the young guards are improving at that end of the floor. We’re at a nice level, but we can certainly improve.”
Friday’s clash promises an intriguing matchup in styles. Cairns sits among the league leaders in three-point attempts (31.5 per game) and will look to rediscover rhythm after a heavy Round 3 defeat to Adelaide. Australian Boomer Jack McVeigh continues to lead the way for the Taipans, averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game.
Rillie said Perth’s focus remains on its own identity and consistency across four quarters.
“They’ll want to come out and perform at a way better level, and we respect that,” he said. “Jack will get the utmost attention and respect, but we can’t sleep on the other guys. We’ve got to stay focused on how we defend and move the ball and the rest will take care of itself.”
Wildcats’ veteran captain Jesse Wagstaff will be a game-time decision after sustaining minor contact during practice, with scans revealing “disruption” to his throat area. Rillie said Wagstaff’s physical style of play and leadership have been influential early in the season.
“Every game so far, he’s come on in that initial burst and made a hustle play that lifts everyone,” Rillie said. “If that guy’s doing it, we all better jump on board.”
Even with Wagstaff uncertain, Perth’s depth continues to shine. Mason Jones has found his rhythm as primary playmaker, Ben Henshall has provided valuable minutes, and Elijah Pepper continues to inject energy and aggression off the bench.
The Wildcats’ early-season form has shown flashes of what this new group is capable of, disciplined defence, unselfish offence and a hunger that’s building week by week.
Friday night in Cairns offers another chance to prove it under pressure.
Against a Taipans side eager to respond on their home floor, Perth’s ability to stay composed, share the ball and win the physical battle inside could be the difference as they chase a third straight victory and keep momentum rolling into Round 5.
