Wildcats off-season wrap: Harris and Harris catch the eye

Michael Harris, who’s playing for Warwick Senators in the NBL1 West competition, went big two nights in a row over the weekend.

He followed up his 28-point, seven-rebound and six-assist showing in Friday night’s loss to Eastern Suns with a game-high 26 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists the following night against Willetton.

The sharpshooting guard is averaging 25.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists in his debut season in the NBL1 West, while shooting at 41.5 per cent from the field.

Big man David Okwera posted yet another double-double for East Perth Eagles, his fourth in as many games, to help his team knock off Perry Lakes 96-69.

Okwera finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists in an impressive all-round showing as the Eagles won their second game of the season.

The New Zealander is averaging double-double numbers to put his name in lights for the competition’s MVP award.

He’s averaging 22 points, 11.8 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 0.8 blocks per game.

“I’m just trying to help my team win,” a humble Harris said post-match.

“I’m just trying to make plays, find the open guy, play good defence and just to try get a win with every chance I can.”

Otago suffered their first loss of the Sal’s NBL season, going down to ladder leaders Franklin 105-71 on the road on Thursday.

Young gun Ben Henshall fought hard in the Nuggets’ loss with 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Centre Jack Andrew had four points and four rebounds against his former teammate Sam Timmins, while Tai Webster (suspended) and Dontae Russo-Nance (wrist injury) both missed the top-of-the-table clash.
