Rnd16 DrinkWise Game Preview: Wildcats vs Phoenix NBL26
Saturday night marks the third meeting between the Perth Wildcats and South East Melbourne Phoenix this season, with both previous contests decided in the closing stages.
With South East Melbourne sitting second on the ladder and the Wildcats just outside the top four, Saturday night shapes as an important contest as Perth look to close the gap.
South East Melbourne have claimed both previous meetings.
In Round 7 in Melbourne, the Phoenix closed out a 94-89 win in a back-and-forth contest that swung on the possession battle.
Round 13 at RAC Arena followed a similar pattern, with Perth controlling long stretches before South East Melbourne surged late to claim a 77-76 victory.
SEM Phoenix have been playing with confidence in recent weeks, continuing to build momentum near the top of the ladder.
Their recent performances have again highlighted their ability to apply pressure where they are able to force turnovers and convert those moments into scoring opportunities, particularly on their home floor.
Perth arrive in Melbourne off a road win in New Zealand and returning home with a 99-91 victory over the Breakers. The Wildcats established early structure and ball movement before responding to sustained pressure, consistently answering New Zealand runs to maintain control late.
Contributions across the rotation, including from Jaron Rillie and Elijah Pepper again highlighted Perth’s ability to execute under pressure away from home.
Speaking ahead of departing for Melbourne, Wildcats head coach John Rillie said his group understands the challenge that lies ahead.
“We’ve handled the stretch on the road very well, but the next game’s our biggest challenge. Going over to Melbourne and trying to defeat a team that we haven’t had success against this year is important to us.”
Rillie believes the Wildcats have competed strongly against the Phoenix, with execution at key moments proving the difference.
“We’ve had two pretty good contests against them so far. In the two previous game they hit big threes against us when it was a really close game late, we had some careless moments on offence that they capitalised on. It’s a fickle game.”
With David Duke Jr sidelined, Rillie said managing rotations and workloads, particularly around Jo Lual-Acuil Jr and Kristian Doolittle playing increased minutes, becomes an important part of ensuring the Wildcats remain effective at both ends of the floor.
“Yes, these guys need to play a lot of minutes, but then you talk about foul trouble and different things that can influence the game.
Any team, in any sport, needs their best players playing at the best possible level.”
Rillie said the physical demands of different matchups play a role in how those minutes are managed.
“Take someone like Jo, if he has a really physical matchup at both ends of the floor, that’s going to take a different toll compared to when it’s more of an up-and-down game. We have to be mindful of that because he means so much to us at both ends of the floor.”
Depth and flexibility within the group allow Perth to adjust as games unfold.
“David Okwera comes in and gives us a different look. Jesse Wagstaff comes in and gives us different looks. It’s about picking the right moments to utilise guys’ skill sets to our advantage.”
As the Wildcats continue their road stretch, Rillie said sustaining performance across the full 40 minutes remains central to turning competitive performances into results.
“When you look at our season so far, we’ve had different periods in games where we haven’t handled it to the best of our ability. Even in our wins, there’s always a period where you’d like it to go a little bit better. Constructing 40 minutes, or as close to 40 as possible, is key for us.”
With three-point defence and late-game composure set to be decisive once again, Perth will look to deliver their first win of the season over South East Melbourne Phoenix on Saturday night at State Basketball Centre.
