The Perth Wildcats return to Far North Queensland for an Ignite Cup showdown with the Cairns Taipans, as both sides look to take a step up the ladder through the early stages of Hungry Jacks NBL26.
The Wildcats claimed the last meeting between the teams in an 80–77 thriller in Cairns, where Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. powered his way to 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Dylan Windler added 26 in a composed road finish.
Perth comes into the contest at 3–3, aiming to rebound and recapture the balance that has delivered their best basketball so far this season.
The Taipans, now 2–5, showed plenty of fight in their most recent outing. Andrew Andrews led the way with 23 points and seven assists, while Admiral Schofield and Reyne Smith provided valuable perimeter support.
Despite key outs to Jack McVeigh and Sam Waardenburg, Cairns have stayed competitive through effort, ball movement and resilience.
Wednesday night presents intriguing matchups across the floor. Lual-Acuil Jr. will again be central to the inside battle, while Perth’s perimeter group look to dictate tempo and stretch the floor.
Cairns’ shooting threats, particularly Andrews and Schofield, will demand attention as the Wildcats look to limit rhythm and second-chance opportunities.
Controlling the glass looms as a decisive factor. In the previous meeting, offensive rebounds kept Cairns in the contest, and Perth will be intent on tightening that area while keeping composure in a building that traditionally rewards toughness and discipline.
With Ignite Cup points in play and every quarter carrying weight, the Wildcats will look to start fast, sustain defensive pressure, and execute in the key moments on the road.
For the Red Army watching at home, the challenge will be whether Perth can impose their style, win the physical contests, and produce another composed performance, one that can push them above .500 and gives them a win on the road before returning to play in front of the Red Army.
Tip-Off: Wednesday 23 October, 4:30 PM AWST
